Yard sale deadline

Friday, May 28 is the deadline for the town-wide yard sale, scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 5.

Residents can participate by holding an individual or multi-family yard sale at their home. Those who register with the Town Clerk before Friday will be listed on the town website and in the town administrator’s weekly newsletter.

Residents who want to take part must obtain a yard sale permit for $5 from the Town Clerk’s office at 83 Greene St. and are encouraged to contribute to the North Smithfield Food Pantry at that time.

Teacher of the Year

Congratulations to Jaime Austin on being named the North Smithfield Teacher of the Year.

Austin has worked in North Smithfield since 2014, and prior to that she worked as a care provider at Refocus Inc. for adults with disabilities. She also previously provided special education services at B.F. Norton in Cumberland.

In a note on the pick, Supt. Michael St. Jean. said the North Smithfield Elementary School special education teacher, “has impeccable ethics and strongly believes that all of her students can learn.”

“Her understanding demeanor comforts students, families, and colleagues. Mrs. Austin understands that success only occurs when families and the school community work together,” wrote St. Jean. “An educator through and through, not every teacher is cut out to do the work Jamie does on a daily basis She is a true advocate for her students and families and a role model to her colleagues.”

St. Jean noted that the district called on Austin this year to assist in developing comprehensive behavior plans for students.

“Mrs. Austin should be recognized as North Smithfield School District’s Teacher of the Year as well as the Rhode Island and National Teacher of the Year,” he said. “We have written many letters of recommendation and we can honestly say that we have never written one with as much confidence as we have in this letter for Jamie Austin. Her love for every student is why she should be honored.”

Adopt a senior

The community is invited to show their support for members of the Class of 2021, and celebrate their adaptation and resilience, by, “adopting,” a senior.

Adoptees will send/drop off a care package celebrating the student’s accomplishments, with the goal of having all delivered to class members prior to graduation.

To participate, email Christine Beauchemin  at sbeauchemin3@verizon.net with the name of the senior you wish to adopt or to request the name of a senior.
