NORTH SMITHFIELD – Celebrations were held at locations across town on Wednesday, March 24 as locals marked the 150th anniversary of the date North Smithfield officially became an independent town.
While distancing guidelines and limitations of gatherings prevented town officials from planning a large-scale celebration, smaller parties were held by various groups and at all three town schools.
An evening event that brought together elected officials was streamed live via Facebook and is posted below.
“This is a very special event – 150 years,” said Richard Keene, president of the North Smithfield Heritage Association Wednesday night. “It’s not an insignificant amount of time.”
Wright’s Dairy Farm & Bakery has created special, limited edition cupcakes to mark the sesquicentennial birthday, which will remain on sale through Wednesday, March 31.
