NORTH SMITHFIELD – Town Council candidate Steve Corriveau said this week that the town has a tremendous opportunity with the property that once held Halliwell Elementary School and that if elected, he hopes to get started on plans to create a community center immediately.

“To be honest, I am quite surprised that during the most recent candidate forum no questions were brought up regarding the Halliwell property,” Corriveau said. “I am shocked, actually. What to do with Halliwell might even be more front and center on every resident’s mind than solar.”

“Right now, we have a tremendous opportunity with this property, one that can bring our residents together of all ages,” Corriveau said. “The two strongest buying points when families move to a town are the quality of schools and town amenities in the community.”

Corriveau said he would be in full support of a plan of action on day one as a council member, with a vision that Halliwell could be transformed into a community center for all residents.

“This project would incorporate a new senior activities center, possibly a municipal pool and playground for families, trails, and picnic tables throughout, just to name a few,” he said.

“Why do we travel to other towns for these things?” Corriveau asked. “Because they’re appealing to the eye and inviting. You don’t have to look far to see that there are other towns, like North Providence, for example, that provide these amenities to non-residents for a nominal fee. This would, in turn, allow the community center to thrive and act as a consistent source of revenue for our town.”

“In my opinion, it’s a win/win and if we build it right, they will come,” he said.

“If we don’t act soon and get the process going, residents may lose this great opportunity,” Corriveau added. “When you caste your vote on November 3, think, ‘I’m ready for this town to move forward, and Halliwell is a part of it.'”
