BURRILLVILLE – Readers submitted dozens of photos in a contest this spring documenting favorite outdoor places in town for possible inclusion in a time capsule buried on the grounds of the Assembly Theatre.
The contest was just one element of the town’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, with the capsule to be dug up in another 50 years. The aim was to show a future generation how the town looks right now, while documenting residents’ appreciation of the town’s unique character, and the trails, landmarks, lakes and other spaces that make many proud to call Burrillville home.
While COVID-19 effectively cancelled events to mark the landmark anniversary, including the time capsule event, NRI NOW continues to collaborate with the Burrillville Earth Day Committee to ensure the time capsule is buried after all activities can safely resume.
Events scheduled for 2020 have tentatively been delayed to 2021.
And to all of those who submitted photos: we haven’t forgotten you.
Over the next several weeks, readers will have the chance to choose which of the submissions should be included via an elimination series. We’re asking you to pick one photo from the submissions below and leave the number in the comment section. The top two will move on to the second round in the contest.
Five photos will be printed to include in the time capsule, and we will announce the event here on NRI NOW. Best of luck to all of the participants.
