Today is Monday, Aug. 19. Here are five things you need to know:

Paddle the Lake

Blackstone Heritage Corridor volunteers will lead kayakers and canoeers as they paddle Spring Lake on Tuesday, Aug. 20,  meeting at the Black Hut boat access on Black Hut Road at 6 p.m.

Before leaving for any paddle, check the Paddle Club’s message board for changes and cancellations to trips at members.boardhost.com/FLATWATER. If paddles are cancelled due to weather, the Paddle Club will try to offer it the following day, Wednesday. To participate in the Blackstone Valley Paddle Club’s events, a Rhode Island Canoe and Kayak Association membership fee of $15 is required, as is a $10.00 membership fee for the Blackstone Valley Paddle Club. The fees provide a family membership and are good for the entire season.

For questions about the Blackstone Valley Paddle Club and membership, contact Cheryl at StoneFoxFarm@juno.com or 401-497-5887.

Ben raises $4,038

Mapleville 8th grader Ben St. Pierre reportedly raised $4,038 for the Burrillville Animal Shelter at his lemonade stand on Saturday, meeting his goal of exceeding last year’s total.

It was the 10th time St. Pierre held an event, and the fundraiser has grown to include raffles, activities and more.

In a post on social media, mother Kristine St. Pierre thanked the community that has made the lemonade stand a success.

“You all came out and opened your hearts to a young boy just trying to do some good,” wrote Kristine.  “He’s passionate about this. You noticed. And you all showed up for him and for the animal shelter.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  That little lemonade stand from 10 years ago has grown a little bit. And none of it would be possible without your help.  Together, we all made a difference yesterday.”

Congrats to Ben on another successful year!

BPAC meeting

The Burrillville Prevention Action Coalition will hold their monthly meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 5 p.m. at the Wallace E. Lee Safety Complex on Victory Highway. BPAC will discuss, plan, and give updates on substance use prevention initiatives occurring within town and the region. Residents of Burrillville are always welcome.

The BFSA will be skating Sunday mornings from 11-11:50 a.m. at the Levy Rink starting September 15 through the end of March. Preregister and pay the $20 registration fee before the start date to receive $20 off tuition.

Brains and Balance

A new, free, eight-week class for Burrillville seniors will begin September 4, designed to help keep older adults mentally sharp and physically stable. Activities in the class will aim to improve memory, reasoning, conceptualization, language and problem solving skills. Exercises will also aim to reduce risk of falling.

Classes will be held on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. for eight weeks at the lodge, beginning Sept. 4. For more information call instructor Susan Sgambato at (401) 568-5473.
