de la Cruz wins in final tally

Jessica de la Cruz of North Smithfield has secured the Republican nomination for the District 23 Senate seat representing Burrillville, North Smithfield and Glocester. de la Cruz ran against Burrillville Town Council President John Pacheco in a primary race to fill the seat held by retiring Sen. Paul Fogarty.

It was a tight race between the two Republican candidates with just 13 votes separating them before provisional votes were counted. The state Board of Elections posted final results this week with de la Cruz winning 646 to Pacheco’s 631. Pacheco has said he will not ask for a recount.

Kevin Heitke has secured the Democratic nomination and will run against de la Cruz in November.
