NORTH SMITHFIELD – A blaze that started in the engine of a truck around noon on Friday, Aug. 28 shut down North Main Street in Slatersville.

No one was injured in the afternoon fire, which was extinguished in just two minutes by North Smithfield Fire & Rescue personnel.

The truck, a 4 X 4 Silverado, was totaled by the time firefighters arrived, but a second vehicle attached on a tow bed appeared salvageable Friday afternoon.

The truck was headed toward Massachusetts on the busy road and had just passed Cumberland Farms. Two men quickly exited the vehicle, which was soon engulfed in flames, but were unable to acquire fire extinguishers from the nearby store. The owner of a house on North Main attempted to help the pair with a garden hose, which was of little use against the blaze.

Traffic was diverted from the road by police on scene until the truck could be towed.
