At the library

NSPD blood drive

The North Smithfield Police Department has scheduled a blood drive, to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 25 from 2 to 6 p.m. at 575 Smithfield Road. Donors are invited to “give a pint, get a pint,” with all participants 21 and older to receive a coupon for a free pint of beer at participating locations. All donors will also be registered to receive a $100 Amazon gift card.

The Rhode Island Blood Center is now taking appointments for the drive, noting that walk-in donations will only be accepted if spacing permits at the time of arrival. Make your appointment by visiting https://donate.ribc.org/donor/schedules/sponsor_code with sponsor code 3989.

Structure building contest winner

Congratulations to Christian Lombardi, the winner of North Smithfield Parks & Recreation Department’s Structure Building Contest.

Heritage auction

The North Smithfield Heritage Association will be holding auctions throughout the month of August in hopes to raise money to replace revenues lost due to cancellation of previously scheduled events and activities. Locals are asked to help the organization to continue preservation efforts this year by bidding freely on items listed each week.

Entertainment

Visit The Island on Friday, Aug. 7 to catch a free concert with Paul Juneau, Rolling Stone’s tribute band 19th Nervous Breakdown and Jimmy Hendrix tribute Johnny Edwards Wild Combo. The concert is set to include visits by food trucks and will begin at 6:30 p.m.

At the Rustic Drive-In this week, catch Deadpool, Star Wars, The Force Awakens and Despicable Me. The drive-in is now open Wednesday through Sunday nights and costs $27 for all cars, regular SUVs and trucks.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, join the NSTA for guided tours of Slatersville cemeteries NS1, NS3 and NS4 with Gail Denomme. Participants will  meet in the Heritage Hall parking lot on Green Street at 9 a.m.  All participants must wear a cloth mask, and a hat, long pants, comfortable walking shoes, water and insect repellent are recommended.

Town meetings

The North Smithfield Town Council will hold a special meeting on Monday, Aug. 3 via Zoom starting at 6:45 p.m. The agenda and instructions to attend can be found here.

The North Smithfield Conservation Commission will hold their regular meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5 starting at 4:30 p.m. at Monica’s Garden at 151 Mendon Road starting at 4:30 p.m. The agenda can be found here.

School Committee Chairman James Lombardi has announced that he plans to call a special meeting for Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 6:30 p.m. for an update from the superintendent on school reopening. The agenda has not yet been posted on the Secretary of State’s website, but residents can follow the chairman for more information here.

The North Smithfield Planning Board has cancelled the meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 6.
