SMITHFIELD – A North Smithfield native who was named the Northern New England Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 has joined the Bryant University lacrosse team.

LaJhon Jones played a postgraduate year at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire after four seasons at LaSalle Academy in Providence.

Athletic achievement runs in the family for Jones. His mother Leslie played field hockey at Rhode Island College and his father, LaJhon Sr., played football at Rhode Island before two years with the San Diego Chargers.

Jones was named a Northern New England All-Star, a Lakes Region All-Star, and was the Northern New England Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 at Brewster. He was the 2018 Rhode Island Player of the Year and a three-time first-team all-state and all-division selection.

He won four consecutive state titles at LaSalle as a player for the Rams and was named a US Lacrosse All-American. Jones also played two years of football.

He will play defense as #92 for the Bulldogs, and was one of 18 players named to the freshman class this week by coach Mike Pressler.

“It is a large, diverse group geographically,” said Pressler. “It is a tremendous class academically.”

“We feel after a month of fall practice to date we have added great depth to many positions of need,” Pressler added. “It’s exciting for us that seven or eight of these freshmen will be in the mix to earn playing time this spring. Collectively they have been a tremendous class to coach. The future of Bryant Bulldog Men’s Lacrosse has never looked brighter.”

The freshman class consists of student-athletes from 14 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York and four Rhode Island natives.

Jones intends to major in business at the Smithfield college.
