Trout stocked in Big Round Top Pond
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has been stocking ponds across Rhode Island – including Burrillville’s Big Round Top Pond – this week with several thousand brook and rainbow trout for the winter trout fishing season.
The one to one-and-a-half-pound, hatchery-raised trout will also be stocked in waterways including Meadowbrook Pond in Richmond, Silver Spring Pond in North Kingstown and Upper Melville Pond, Portsmouth.
A current fishing license and a Trout Conservation Stamp are required to keep or possess a trout. The daily creel and possession limit for trout is two from Dec. 1, 2018, through Feb. 28, 2019.
DEM advises anglers to check with individual communities about safe ice conditions on local ponds before ice fishing; DEM does not monitor ice conditions in local communities. Ice must have a uniform thickness of at least six inches before it is considered safe by DEM. It generally takes at least five to seven consecutive days of temperatures in the low 20s and is determined by a number of factors such as the size and depth of a pond, presence of springs or currents, and local temperature fluctuations. First major snow expected
The town of Burrillville is expected to get its first major snow storm this weekend and the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening.
The storm is predicted to include heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Total snow accumulations of 6 inches or more are possible with the highest risk north of the Massachusetts turnpike. The highest potential for over a foot of snow is north of route 2 in Massachusetts.
Snow is expected to develop by early Saturday evening and will change to sleet and freezing rain between midnight and 6 a.m. Sunday. Precipitation may change to a period of all rain, which could result in a flash freeze on Sunday due to rapidly falling temperatures.
According to NWS, mixed precipitation will transition back to a period of snow before ending sometime Sunday afternoon or early evening.
Pascoag Express changes Saturday
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority will implement winter service changes effective Saturday, Jan. 19, including changes to the 9X Pascoag Express.

Family Skate Day fundraiser
On Monday, Jan. 21 – Martin Luther King Day – Levy Ice Rink will hold a Family Skate Day fundraiser starting at 1 p.m. Bring the kids, family & friends to skate and help raise funds to support grants and scholarships for Burrillville students. The cost is $5 per person and
free skate rentals are available.
Trash delay
There will be no trash or recycling pickup in Burrillville on Monday, Jan. 21 for Martin Luther King Day. Pickup will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week. Questions can be directed to the Department of Public Works at 568-4440 ext. 12.
Zoning Board, Recreation Commission seek members
The town’s Recreation Commission and Zoning Board of Review are currently seeking members.
