Solar project, holiday gatherings and an Escape Room: Five things you need to know this week

Planning board 

The Burrillville Planning Board will gather for their regular meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3 to discuss projects including a major land development plan by Burrillville Solar, LLC. The full agenda can be found here.

Escape Room

Jesse Smith Memorial Library will have an Escape Room event on Tuesday, Dec. 4 from 3 to 7 p.m.  See if you can break Tinkham’s code to find a treasure before time runs out. Escape Room is a group activity for ages ten and up and participants must register at the reference department.

BHPS Potluck/Scotland slideshow

The Burrillville Historical & Preservation Society will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring any dish – main course or dessert. The group will have a potluck/holiday gathering starting at 6 p.m., and then have a brief meeting.

After the meeting Betty Mencucci will present a slideshow on the BHPS sponsored trip to Scotland last May.

After the slideshow there will be an optional gift exchange. If you’d like to participate, bring a wrapped gift worth about $5. There will also be free drawings for two door prizes and you must be present to win.

If you plan to attend, contact Mencucci at 568-8449 so that there will be adequate seating. You do not need to be a member to attend and all are invited.

Power plant hearings

EFSB meetings begin again this week.  Hearings resume will on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 9:30 a.m. in Hearing Room A of the Public Utilities Commission office building, 89 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick.

Oral public comment will not be heard at this hearing. The hearing will be streamed live at www.ustream.tv/channel/WqQyXw296dg.

Deadlines are approaching for those who would like to attend several local holiday gatherings and events.

Wallum Lake Rod & Gun Club’s Christmas Party will be held on Friday, Dec. 14 from 6 to 10 p.m. Only 130 tickets will be sold, and need to be purchased before Dec. 6. Tickets are $27.50 for adults, $15 for children 10 to 17, and free for children under 10 and can be purchased at the club. Santa will be there so those bringing a child are also asked to bring a wrapped gift. There will also be a Yankee Swap, and the suggested price of the gift is $15.

New Providence Big Band will perform a free concert at the Assembly Theatre for residents over 60 and those with disabilities on Sunday, Dec. 16 from 3 to 5 p.m.. Transportation and refreshments will be provided for the event, funded through a recent grant for seniors in Burrillville. Preregistration is required and will be offered on a first come, first serve basis by calling Parks and Recreation at 568-9470 or the Board of Administration at 568-4300 ext 137.

Enjoy a night out with dinner, dancing and more to benefit Cory’s Crusaders – an organization that benefits children fighting brain cancer on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 6 tp 11:30 p.m. The night will start off with a beer and wine tasting provided by Chepachet Village Wine & Spirits from 6-7 p.m., folllowed by a chicken & roast beef dinner. There will be a photo booth, raffles and a $100 gift card door prize provided by Bella Restaurant and Banquet!

Tickets cost $50 for the Winter Gala, and must be purchased in advance. Anyone who purchases their tickets before Saturday, Dec. 15 will receive a free sheet of 25 raffle tickets, which also includes a chance at the door prize.
