BURRILLVILLE –  The Public Protection Classification of the Oakland-Mapleville Fire District will soon be upgraded, a change that could result in a discount for residents on their insurance bills.

The district will be upgraded from 6/8B to 04/4Y from  on Feb. 1, 2019 as a result of a survey that was just completed.

This survey rates multiple factors to determine the efficacy of fire protection in a fire district such as water supply, communications, apparatus and fire department operations.

“We were particularly proud of our score in operations,” Chief Joseph Bertholic said. “We have spent many hours in training and planning, and to have it recognized by a national rating service is quite an honor. This will also provide our taxpayers with considerable savings on their fire and homeowners insurance.”

The district encompasses an area of approximately 13-square-miles with a resident population of approximately 4,400. It is staffed by two paid firefighters 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and augmented by volunteers as needed.

“We are proud of the men and women of our fire department who not only fight fires and perform emergency medical service, but dedicate themselves to constantly improving for the sake of those they serve,” chimed in Fire District Clerk Richard Lapierre. “This upgrade is a direct result of the effort they put in each day.”

Bertholic urged district residents to contact their insurance companies on or after Feb. 1, to assure that they receive a credit on their insurance policies that reflect the upgrade.
