Big scares at Jesse Smith
Visit the Jesse Smith Memorial Library tonight, Oct. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. for some seriously scary fun. Do you dare to walk through the library after dark and see what haunts the stacks? The event includes walking in the darkness and sudden scares, and is not appropriate for young children. Last tour begins at 8:30 p.m.
From 11 a.m. to noon at Saturday, return to Jesse Smith to decorate a sugar skull. Materials will be provided if you register with the library reference department.
Pick your pumpkin!
On Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 to 11 a.m. the Downtown Pascoag Neighborhood Association will have pumpkins available for $5 in advance of next weekend’s Pumpkin Fest, where the decorated gourds can be entered in a free contest. Burrillville resident Erin Todisco-Place will host La Dolce Vita at Bella Saturday night, a fundraiser for the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Free field training for hunters
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will host a free field training workshop for hunters on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their Division of Fish & Wildlife Education Center, 1-B Camp E-Hun-Tee Place in Exeter. The program is designed to augment classroom and internet training and is open to anyone who has completed a hunter or bowhunter education course.
‘Practical Field Training for Hunters’ offers a fun, informative, hands-on opportunity for persons looking for an educational experience outside the classroom, unplugged from the laptop, and in nature where hunting is conducted. Participants will be led on a trail walk with simulated “shoot/don’t shoot” scenarios and will be asked to demonstrate proper safety procedures as various hunting-related situations are encountered. Participants will learn about basic land navigation; firearms familiarization; safe methods of carry; basic shooting skills; safety in the field; range estimation; ethical choices; animal recovery; and tree stand safety. The field training will take approximately three hours to complete.
The session will be led by hunter education instructors from DEM’s Division of Fish & Wildlife. The program will be held rain or shine. Appropriate dress for weather conditions is suggested as participants will be in the woods for the duration of the event. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch, snacks, and beverages.
