BURRILLVILLE – A CNA at Bayberry Commons is facing eight charges after admitting to police that she was involved in at least six different larcenies at the nursing and rehabilitation center.

Tareka Brais, 27, of 400 Iron Mine Road, Harrisville, was brought in for questioning as the result of an investigation by members of the Burrillville Police Department.

“This arrest cleared up a number of larcenies,” said Major Dennis Leahey. “This was a good arrest.”

Leahey said that staff and residents at the facility had been reporting the loss of cash and credit cards since April and following up on a recent report in June, officers began building leads.

“It culminated with Ms. Brais being brought in for questioning,” said Leahey.

Leahey said Brais admitted to at least half a dozen larcenies during questioning July 2, with the highest dollar amount totaling $130.

Brais was charged with two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, two counts of theft obtained by credit card, and two counts of larceny under $1,500.

According to criminal court records, Brais faces charges dating back to 2015.  Brais was charged with four counts of larceny of less than $1,500, and one charge of fraudulent use of a credit card stemming from that year.

Brais is due back in court for a pretrial conference on July 17.

“This was a really good cooperative effort between a number of members of this department,” said Leahey. “The victims may not recover things that were taken from them but at least they have some comfort knowing the person was apprehended.”

Editor’s note: Brais is currently facing the charges stemming from 2015, listed in the state’s criminal database. An original version of this article referenced the counts as past charges.
