BURRILLVILLE – The Burrillville Town Council unanimously passed new regulations that will allow breweries, distilleries, wineries, brewpubs and farm wineries to be built in certain areas.

The law, passed at the council’s Wednesday, April 11 meeting following years several revisions and years of debate and discussion, amends Chapter 30 of the town’s general ordinances. Previously, breweries and distilleries were expressly prohibited under town zoning law and other potential uses, such as farm wineries, were not addressed.

“We are in agreement that this is something the town should try,” said Town Manager Michael Wood in support of the change. “In the form you’ve got it here tonight, I think it gives an opportunity for the community to have something  to carve out a niche and for certain people expand the use on their properties.”

According to the new regulation, new projects must still follow the process of development plan review and those who wish to open such a facility must apply to the Town Council for all applicable licenses. Wineries will be allowed by code on properties zoned for farming with two or five acres of land, as well as properties zoned general or light industrial, and will be allowed in village and general commercial zones with a special use permit. Breweries and distilleries will be permitted in areas zoned general or village commercial, or general or light industrial.

Council member Ray Trinque noted of the change, “There’s new types of businesses, which I think are great, and it’s also farm friendly.”

“We think it’s a good initiative and I think it’s going to be a betterment to our community in improving our business climate and the agricultural climate,
Wood said. “I think it’s going to be a great idea.”
